Triolet by Maryam Golpayegani, began with a question: can an Arabic type family grow from the logic of the script itself? The project explores whether Arabic calligraphic styles can function as styles within a type family, offering an alternative to conventional typographic hierarchy. It uses axis variations and differences in calligraphic movement to create subtle distinctions between styles. Latin and Arabic are developed with equal care, finding common ground within a shared system. Rather than treating one as secondary, each is conceived as a translation of the other while remaining true to its own visual logic.

Maryam Golpayegani is a type designer from Tehran, Iran. She holds a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the University of Tehran and a Master’s in Type Design from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Working bilingually across Latin and Perso-Arabic scripts, she is drawn to questioning inherited norms and rethinking the conventions that shape Arabic type design.
