The Alunex font family explores materials and letterforms. I started creating 3D letters with various materials, translating them back to a 2D environment using inner shadows. I ended up with four digital fonts: Black, Medium, and two experimental shadow styles. I generated these from the Black style using a custom RoboFont script. To achieve interesting yet recognizable shadow letters, the Black style features small horizontal and vertical counters and deep cuts (A, H, N, M). 

Tereza Umlaufová is a type and graphic designer from Prague, Czechia. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Visual Communication from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. Her joy for type comes from exploring and experimenting with unusual letterforms, questioning legibility, and challenging current font technologies.
